products typical of burning organic material. May emit clouds of acrid smoke. WARNING: Long standing in contact with air and light may result in the formationof potentially explosive peroxides. FIRE INCOMPATIBILITY • Avoid contamination with oxidising agents i.e. nitrates, oxidising acids, chlorine bleaches, pool chlorine etc. as ignition may HAZCHEM •3Z Section 6 - ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES MINOR SPILLS ■ Environmental hazard - contain spillage. • Clean up all spills immediately. • Avoid breathing vapours and contact with skin and eyes. • Control personal contact by using protective equipment. • Contain and absorb spill with sand, earth, inert material or vermiculite. MAJOR SPILLS ■ Environmental hazard - contain spillage. • Absorb or contain isothiazolinone liquid spills with sand, earth, inert material or vermiculite. • The absorbent (and surface soil to a depth sufficient to remove all of the biocide) should be shovelled into a drum and treated
with an 11% solution of sodium metabisulfite (Na2S2O5) or sodium bisulfite (NaHSO3), or 12% sodium sulfite (Na2SO3) and 8%hydrochloric acid (HCl).
• Glutathione has also been used to inactivate the isothiazolinones. • Use 20 volumes of decontaminating solution for each volume of biocide, and let containers stand for at least 30 minutes to
deactivate microbicide before disposal.
• DO NOT touch the spill material. Personal Protective Equipment advice is contained in Section 8 of the MSDS. Section 7 - HANDLING AND STORAGE PROCEDURE FOR HANDLING • DO NOT allow clothing wet with material to stay in contact with skin. • Avoid all personal contact, including inhalation. • Wear protective clothing when risk of exposure occurs. • Use in a well-ventilated area. • Prevent concentration in hollows and sumps. SUITABLE CONTAINER • Metal can or drum • Packaging as recommended by manufacturer. • Check all containers are clearly labelled and free from leaks. STORAGE INCOMPATIBILITY • Polymerisation may occur slowly at room temperature. • Storage requires stabilising inhibitor content and dissolved oxygen content to be monitored. Refer to manufacturer's recommended levels. • DO NOT overfill containers so as to maintain free head space above product. • Blanketing or sparging with nitrogen or oxygen free gas will deactivate stabiliser. • Store below 38 deg. C. • Contamination with polymerisation catalysts - peroxides, persulfates, oxidising agents - also strong acids, strong alkalies, will cause polymerisation with exotherm - generation of heat. • Polymerisation of large quantities may be violent - even explosive. STORAGE REQUIREMENTS • WARNING: Decomposition may occur after prolonged storage. • Polymerisation may occur slowly at room temperature. • Storage requires stabilising inhibitor content and dissolved oxygen content to be monitored. Refer to manufacturer's recommended levels. • DO NOT overfill containers so as to maintain free head space above product. • Blanketing or sparging with nitrogen or oxygen free gas will deactivate stabiliser. continued. Section 8 - EXPOSURE CONTROLS / PERSONAL PROTECTION EXPOSURE CONTROLS The following materials had no OELs on our records • 2, 2- bis[4- (2- methacryloxy)ethoxy)phenyl]propane:
• bisphenol A/ propylene oxide/ fumarate copolymer:
MATERIAL DATA 2,2-BIS[4-(2-METHACRYLOXY)ETHOXY)PHENYL]PROPANE: 2-HYDROXYPROPYL METHACRYLATE: SACCHARIN:
■ Sensory irritants are chemicals that produce temporary and undesirable side-effects on the eyes, nose or throat.
Historically occupational exposure standards for these irritants have been based on observation of workers' responses to variousairborne concentrations.
BISPHENOL A/ PROPYLENE OXIDE/ FUMARATE COPOLYMER:SACCHARIN:
■ It is the goal of the ACGIH (and other Agencies) to recommend TLVs (or their equivalent) for all substances for which there
is evidence of health effects at airborne concentrations encountered in the workplace.
At this time no TLV has been established, even though this material may produce adverse health effects (as evidenced in animal
experiments or clinical experience).
NOTE: The ACGIH occupational exposure standard for Particles Not Otherwise Specified (P.N.O.S) does NOT apply.
■ None assigned. Refer to individual constituents.
2,2-BIS[4-(2-METHACRYLOXY)ETHOXY)PHENYL]PROPANE:
■ CEL TWA: 1 mg/m3 [compare WEEL-TWA* for multifunctional acrylates (MFAs)]Exposure to MFAs has been reported to cause contact dermatitis in humans and serious eye injury in laboratory animals.
Exposure to some MFA-resin containing aerosols has also been reported to cause dermatitis.
■ For cumyl hydroperoxide:CEL TWA: 1 ppm, 6 mg/m3 (SKIN) (compare WEEL TWA)Saturated vapour concentration: 2632 ppm at 20 C. Cumene hydroperoxide is severely irritating to the eyes and skin and is moderately toxic by ingestion, inhalation and dermal
For cumene:Odour Threshold Value: 0.008-0.132 ppm (detection), 0.047 ppm (recognition)Exposure at or below the TLV-TWA is thought to prevent induction of narcosis. For acetophenone:Odour Threshold Value: 0.17 ppmAcetophenone produces narcosis and anaesthesia when swallowed or injected intravenously or subcutaneously. Contact with the
skin produces irritation and, if confined, may burn.
Acute inhalation studies indicate that a saturated atmosphere (nominally 400 ppm) produced no fatalities in rats exposed for 8
Exposure limits with "skin" notation indicate that vapour and liquid may be absorbed through intact skin. Absorption by skin
may readily exceed vapour inhalation exposure. Symptoms for skin absorption are the same as for inhalation. Contact with eyes andmucous membranes may also contribute to overall exposure and may also invalidate the exposure standard.
■ CEL TWA: 0.1 mg/m3; STEL 0.3 mg/m3 total isothiazolinones (Rohm and Haas). continued. (AS/NZS 1716 & 1715, EN 143:2000 & 149:2001, ANSI Z88 or national equivalent) EYE • Safety glasses with side shields. • Chemical goggles. • Contact lenses may pose a special hazard; soft contact lenses may absorb and concentrate irritants. A written policy document,
describing the wearing of lens or restrictions on use, should be created for each workplace or task. This should include areview of lens absorption and adsorption for the class of chemicals in use and an account of injury experience. Medical andfirst-aid personnel should be trained in their removal and suitable equipment should be readily available. In the event ofchemical exposure, begin eye irrigation immediately and remove contact lens as soon as practicable. Lens should be removed atthe first signs of eye redness or irritation - lens should be removed in a clean environment only after workers have washedhands thoroughly. [CDC NIOSH Current Intelligence Bulletin 59], [AS/NZS 1336 or national equivalent]. HANDS/FEET ■ NOTE: • The material may produce skin sensitisation in predisposed individuals. Care must be taken, when removing gloves and other
protective equipment, to avoid all possible skin contact.
• Contaminated leather items, such as shoes, belts and watch-bands should be removed and destroyed. • Butyl rubber gloves. • Nitrile rubber gloves. Suitability and durability of glove type is dependent on usage. Important factors in the selection of gloves include:• frequency and duration of contact,• chemical resistance of glove material,• glove thickness and• dexterity. General warning: Do NOT use latex gloves! Use only recommended gloves - using the wrong gloves may increase the risk:
Exposure condition Short time use; (few minutes

OTHER • Overalls. • P.V.C. apron. • Barrier cream. • Skin cleansing cream. ENGINEERING CONTROLS ■ Engineering controls are used to remove a hazard or place a barrier between the worker and the hazard. Well-designed engineering controls can be highly effective in protecting workers and will typically be independent of worker interactions to provide this high level of protection. The basic types of engineering controls are: Process controls which involve changing the way a job activity or process is done to reduce the risk. Enclosure and/or isolation of emission source which keeps a selected hazard "physically" away from the worker and ventilation that strategically "adds" and "removes" air in the work environment. CARE: Use of a quantity of this material in confined space or poorly ventilated area, where rapid build up of concentrated atmosphere may occur, could require increased ventilation and/or protective gear. continued. PHYSICAL PROPERTIES Liquid. Section 10 - STABILITY AND REACTIVITY CONDITIONS CONTRIBUTING TO INSTABILITY • Polymerisation may occur at elevated temperatures. • Polymerisation may be accompanied by generation of heat as exotherm. • Process is self accelerating as heating causes more rapid polymerisation. • Exotherm may cause boiling with generation of acrid, toxic and flammable vapour. For incompatible materials - refer to Section 7 - Handling and Storage. Section 11 - TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION POTENTIAL HEALTH EFFECTS ACUTE HEALTH EFFECTS SWALLOWED ■ Accidental ingestion of the material may be damaging to the health of the individual. Ingestion may result in nausea, abdominal irritation, pain and vomiting. EYE ■ If applied to the eyes, this material causes severe eye damage. SKIN ■ This material can cause inflammation of the skin oncontact in some persons. The material may accentuate any pre-existing dermatitis condition. The material is a vesicant causing blistering on contact. Entry into the blood-stream, through, for example, cuts, abrasions or lesions, may produce systemic injury with harmful effects. Examine the skin prior to the use of the material and ensure that any external damage is suitably protected. INHALED ■ Inhalation of vapours or aerosols (mists, fumes), generated by the material during the course of normal handling, may be harmful. The material can cause respiratory irritation in some persons. The body's response to such irritation can cause further lung damage. Inhalation of vapours may cause drowsiness and dizziness. This may be accompanied by sleepiness, reduced alertness, loss of reflexes, lack of co-ordination, and vertigo. Inhalation hazard is increased at higher temperatures. Acute effects from inhalation of high vapour concentrations may be chest and nasal irritation with coughing, sneezing, headache and even nausea. CHRONIC HEALTH EFFECTS ■ Skin contact with the material is more likely to cause a sensitisation reaction in some persons compared to the general population. There has been some concern that this material can cause cancer or mutations but there is not enough data to make an assessment. Substance accumulation, in the human body, may occur and may cause some concern following repeated or long-term occupational exposure. continued. There is some evidence that inhaling this product is more likely to cause a sensitisation reaction in some persons compared tothe general population. Based on experience with similar materials, there is a possibility that exposure to the material may reduce fertility in humansat levels which do not cause other toxic effects. Sensitisation may give severe responses to very low levels of exposure, i.e. hypersensitivity. Sensitised persons should not beallowed to work in situations where exposure may occur.
