Medical and therapeutic interventions - pediatrics – neurological disorders Position of the course
The student has a good understanding of motor development, pathology, classificationof children with cerebral palsy and assessment of children with neurological disorders.
The most important aim of this course is developing knowlegde and insight into medicaland therapeutic interventions in children with neurological disorders.
Advanced knowledge on therapeutic interventions (mobilisation, stretching, strengthtraining, physical activity, functional training, .) for children with neurological diordersare discussed. Students learn specific treatment skills in analysing and facilitatingnormal movements, in using different keypoints of control, in influencing patterns ofmovement and tone, and in stimulating sequences of movement and their variations.
Attention is given to correct handling and parent training,.
Students are introduced in the use of occupational (sensory dysfunction, vision, handfunction .) and speech and language therapy ( communication, eating and drinking,.).
A variety of treatment options (botulinum toxin treatment, selective dorsal rhizotomy, intrathecal baclofen, orthopaedic surgery, deep brain stimulation) are discussed.
Indications and relevance for the different pathologies is given. The specificphysiotherapeutic treatment and orthotic management following the different medicalinterventions is discussed in detail. The use of orthoses and equipment is given.
Clinical demonstrations are performed to illustrate the treatment options and tostimulate the clinical reasoning process in treatment.
Initial competences
The student has a good knowledge of- motor development - neuromotor concepts - classification of children with cerebralpalsy - the pathophysiology of children with neuromotor disorders - the assessment andthe interventions of the physiotheray for children with neuromotor disorders Final competences
After completing this course the student will be able:- to describe and demonstrate a specific treatment plan and handling strategies fordifferent pathologies across several ages, taking into account environment andpersonal context of the children and the longterm evolution - to analyse and facilitatenormal movement and postural control and to influence variations in tone - to integrateinformation of the clinical examination, clinical movement analysis and other evaluationmethods in the therapeutic interventions - to delineate an adequate after-care programfor the different medical interventions - to optimise activity and participation goals, including the use of relevant orthoses and equipment - to demonstrate a critical attitudetowards physiotherapeutic interventions in children and adolescents Conditions for credit contract
