Manager’s Word

Hello everyone
Three weeks to Christmas - hard to believe… Kids are on holiday and the
golf course is looking amazing. Encourage the youngsters to come and play
golf. What a great way to enjoy the holidays in beautiful surroundings
pursuing a healthy pastime!

Speaking of youngsters, we also have a new membership category for Junior
Bowls, to try and encourage young people to play the game. Kids join for
free and only pay their affiliation. There are older bowlers only too happy to
help show young people the ropes. Chat to Bruce 072 475 6048 or any Bowls
Committee Member for more info.
Bookings for the Christmas Lunch on the 22nd December 2013, are filling
up fast, so if you want to book your place, please contact Chris on (011) 907
8906 as soon as possible. The menu looks fantastic and at R100 a head, you
aren’t breaking the bank for a delicious 3 course meal either.
A few Members met with the Committee to voice some concerns/perceptions
last week, namely:
Not all Committee Members are involved in all decisions
Confusion surrounding Handicap Leagues next year (Saturday or
Sunday)
Consistency in discipline for offenders
Resignation of the Treasurer

All four issues were discussed at length and any concerns were laid to rest.
The meeting closed amicably with smiles all round. It’s great to see that the
Club in is such a healthy place. When different people can gather to voice
their opinions and are prepared to hear each other, it bodes well for the
future.
Our Bar Manager, Stuart McLaren and his fiancé, Belinda tie the knot this
Saturday at the Club. We wish them many years of happiness and prosperity
together.
Have a fantastic week.
Cheers
David

Well we did get the rain and how the course has responded, the greens last Saturday were as good as any time I have played the Old and the New “Reading”. They might even be better this week after a heavy verti-cutting and dusting this week, we have a lot to be grateful for and just to make you feel good I am leaving the paragraph below in for those who missed it. Subs this year have been held below R6000.00 possibly for the last time, this is a below inflation increase, with a R10 increase on green fees. Encourage your colleagues to try us out, maybe we can pick up some new playing members, we are now 25% below the costs of comparable local courses, and if you add the 20% discount on food and drink coupled with the best course around it really makes sense to be a part of “Reading”. To reiterate what I said in prize giving on Saturday, and I am sure Dave will have given the results of a “concerned members” meeting last week, if you have any concerns and cannot get an answer from any particular Committee Member, please approach myself for Golf or Mike for General, it would be great if you loved us, but if you don’t we are here to serve. There are no and never will be any hidden agendas. If it was true (which it isn’t) that 2 people were running the Club, with the course condition, the renovations and the money in the bank they are doing a good job The reality of the situation is that everybody concerned, Committee and Staff are doing a great job and along with you the Members supporting the Club we are going higher and higher. Please note my telephone number below for any queries my bank account details can be given on request KEEP SUPPORTING YOUR CLUB Kevin Gough 083-601-7064 From :- The Golf Director

Bowls Section

Dear Fellow Bowlers,
MEMBER NEWS
It is with regret that we had four of our Committee Members resign, Val Jarvis,
John and Janet Blyth, and Dave Dyason. Thank you so much, John and
Janet, for all your hard work in the time you have served on the Committee.
Thank you for being prepared to carry on with the huge task of being
Competition Secretaries for Men's and Ladies' Comps. You do a tremendous
job. Thanks again Val for your tremendous work.
We had to say goodbye once again. Dave King passed away as well as one of
our Member's husband, Boet Jansen, who was a member for a short while, but
was there every Wednesday to come and watch Jean play her game of bowls?
Dear Jean may you find the comfort that you need in these difficult times.
Eddie Smyth's wife, Molly, had two strokes, was in hospital, and is recovering
at home with care. George gave us all a big fright a few weeks ago, but he is
back in full force and playing his game of bowls twice a week. George you are
an inspiration to one and all! Tony Ribeiro is coming on slowly but surely. He
will be going in for surgery early in the next month. Take care Tony!
OUTSIDE COMPETITIONS

Two teams went to Mielieland and Bethlehem. They made friends while having
a good time. The Nest was also well attended. Six and a half teams went. Wim,
Ursula, Santie and Shirley won the tournament with John, Janet, Alan and
Alison coming second. Well done guys we are very proud of you. The others
had a wonderful time enjoying good food and good company.
EGB Mixed Fours were played the same weekend. Louis, Yvonne, Ben and
June Cronje went through to the fourth round but lost on the last end. Well
done all of you. Johnny, Rachel, Tom Cloete and Denise Fouche also played
and won two of their three games.
The District Mid Week Pairs was also played. Denise W and Miranda, and
Corrie and Annie are still playing in the Round Robin games.

FORTHCOMING EVENTS
Bowls Awareness Day will take place this coming Sunday, 3 November. Bring
a buddy along to come and join in the fun.
OPENING OF THE GREENS
We had a wonderful turn out for our opening. The new members we introduced
and Bruce opened the greens by hoisting our flag and delivering the first jack
of the new season. Jacks played against the Jills. For the first time in a while
the Jills beat the Jacks. Well done girls!
